How
Docusol
®
Works
The
Docusol
®
formulation functions as a hyper-osmotic laxative by drawing water into the bowel from surrounding body tissues. When the docusate and soft soaps are introduced, this additional fluid is incorporated into the stool. Docusate salts act as softeners, preparing the stool to more readily mix with watery fluids. Increased mass of the stool precipitates bowel evacuation by stimulating nerve endings in the bowel lining and initiating peristalsis. Not only does it soften and loosen the stool, but it augments a normal stimulus.

ACTIONS AND USES:
This product is employed for the relief of constipation due to infrequent or difficult bowel movements.
Docusol
®
and
Docusol
®
Plus
penetrates and softens the stool, thereby promoting bowel movement. It is indicated for dyschezia, lesions of the anus that make defecation painful, impaction associated with megacolon, anal fissure, and postoperative anal atresia. It has been employed successfully in bedridden patients and those patients with decreased mobility in a patient group from child to adult.
Docusol
®
and
Docusol
®
Plus
has also been used with acute rehabilitation patients with such diagnoses as spinal cord injuries, cerebral vascular accidents, fractures, joint replacements, and closed head injuries. In bowel management programs,
Docusol
®
and
Docusol
®
Plus
help establish a more predictable bowel routine along with reducing the likelihood of bowel accidents and incontinence.
Docusol
®
and
Docusol
®
Plus
also contains Benzocaine to anesthetize the rectum and lower bowel; and is beneficial when an anesthetic is needed to prevent hyperreflexia crisis or painful bowel movement.
DOSAGE:
One unit rectally as needed or as directed by a doctor. Do not exceed doctor’s recommendations. See precautions. Adults and children 12 years of age and older (with adult supervision), one to three units daily. Children under 12 years of age, consult a doctor prior to use
.

Docusol

Pluse are not recommended for Children under the age of 12.
ADMINISTRATION:
Docusol
®
and
Docusol
®
Plus is to be used as an enema. This is not a suppository. Do not take orally.
Administering the mini enema:
Twist off and remove tip. Place water or a few drops of the product on the shaft of the tube to lubricate prior to insertion. It is also recommended that one of these lubricants be applied to the anus before inserting the enema. With steady pressure, gently insert the enema into the rectum with care to prevent damage to the rectal wall. Squeeze to empty the contents. Keep the tube squeezed until it is removed from the rectum. After the contents have been emptied, remove the disposable tube and discard. A small amount of liquid may remain in the unit after use.
Positioning:
For best results, lay on left side with knees bent
Second Position: Kneel, then lower head and chest forward until side of face is resting on the surface.
CAUTION:
Discontinue use if resistance is encountered. Forcing the enema may result in injury or damage to the rectum. If product is not administered properly and occasional rectal examinations are not performed, serious complications can arise. Occasional rectal exams are imperative for patients with impaired rectal function, especially loss of sensation.
PRECAUTIONS:
Individuals with sensitivity to Benzocaine should not use
Docusol
®
Plus
. If rectal irritation or a rash around the anus appears, the enemas should be discontinued. Prolonged administration together with mineral oil should be avoided.
WARNINGS:
Do not use laxative products when abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting are present nor for a period longer than 1 week unless directed by a doctor. If you have noticed a sudden change in bowel habits that persists over a period of 2 weeks, consult a doctor before using a laxative. Rectal bleeding or failure to have a bowel movement after use of a laxative may indicate a serious condition. Discontinue use and consult your doctor.
HOW SUPPLIED:
Docusol
®
and
Docusol
®
®
Plus
is available in boxes of 5 single use 5ml tubes.
How long will it take to work?
This can vary from person to person. Some individuals will experience immediate results, where others may go through an acclimation period for the body to adjust to a different process. This can range anywhere from 3-10 bowel care sessions.
Will it cut my timing down?
Yes. With consistent use of
Docusol
®
you should be spending less time doing your bowel program. Most will experience an evacuation in 15 minutes or less.
Will it irritate me?
No. The
Docusol
®
formulation is one of the least invasive bowel care products on the market. It does not irritate the mucosal lining to provide an evacuation. Instead it draws water from surrounding tissues, incorporates the water into the stool, initiating the most “Normal” or “Natural” evacuation.
Will I get mucosal discharge?
Docusol
®
will not produce a mucosal discharge, as the formulation incorporates itself into the stool, so when the evacuation occurs, the product is eliminated as well. Many using suppositories experience a mucosal discharge due to the suppository itself. The residual of the suppository is left behind which typically will set an individual up for one of two things—Either an episode of incontinence or a mucosal discharge from the suppository 2-4 hours after a bowel care session.
What happens if it does not work?
When beginning use of
Docusol
®
, you may go through an acclimation period to re-adjust your body to a more “Natural” process. If after 15-20 minutes you have not experienced an evacuation, try digital stimulation to see if you can help bring the stool down. If still no evacuation, insert a second
Docusol
®
mini enema. This process can be completed up to three times during a bowel care session or per day.
What’s the difference between the plus and regular?
The only difference between the two products is that
Docusol
®
Plus
contains the addition of 20mg of Benzocaine to help relieve symptoms of Autonomic Dysreflexia or pain while producing a bowel movement.
Will I get addicted to it?
No.
Docusol
®
is non-habit forming.
Will I need to still do digital stimulation?
Yes. However, you may notice that you have reduced the amount of digital stimulation required.
Can I use
Docusol
®
?
Yes.
Docusol
®
may be used for occasional constipation.
