What is gas?
There are over 7 billion people on earth, and every one of them gets gas. And while you may think you get gas too often or have too much, the truth is, what you're experiencing is completely normal and natural. It is rare to have too much gas. But what exactly is gas? Gas is a by-product of your body breaking down food to make energy. Gas is made in both the stomach and the intestines.
Eructation
This is when the gas in your stomach comes out your mouth. The gas you burp out after a good meal is mostly oxygen and carbon dioxide you swallowed while eating and drinking.
Flatulation
This is when the gas in your intestines comes out the other end. The gas in your intestines is a little more complex. It's a blend of nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon, dioxide, oxygen, methane and less than 1% hydrogen sulfide - but it's that 1% that gives gas its delightful bouquet.
Is Your Diet High in Fiber?
Eating fibrous foods like beans, cabbage, and broccoli can produce more gas because of your gut bacteria’s inability to fully digest them. If you’re prone to gas, you may want to take a look at your overall fiber intake!
No Time for a Sit-Down Meal?
Swallowing too much air is the #2 cause of gas and bloating – pun intended. Avoid eating too quickly, chewing gum, smoking, sucking on hard candy, or drinking through straws. Activities that lead to more instances of swallowing air can produce more gas as the air gets caught in your stomach.
Do You Have Food Intolerances?
Some medical conditions don’t allow your body to properly process certain foods. For example, if someone is lactose intolerant, they can’t process the sugar in milk. This all-too-common condition can result in gas and bloating.
Eating a Lot of Sugar and Fruits?
Complex carbohydrates like sugars, starches, and fatty foods are not easily digestible for many people. Fruits like bananas and apples can also generate a fair amount of gas, as they’re high in sugar. However, it’s important to eat a balanced diet of fruits and veggies, and your body will often adjust to these foods after a period of time.
1. Avoid alcohol or carbonated beverages
2. Do not smoke or consume tobacco products
3. Drink more water
