PPIs, H2s, Antacids
PPIs, or proton pump inhibitors like Nexium 24HR, treat frequent heartburn by blocking the production of acid at the source. Protection from frequent heartburn lasts for 24 hours. PPIs may take 1-4 days for full effect, but remains effective over consecutive doses.
H2s, or histamine blockers, treat heartburn by blocking one of the signals that tell your body to make acid. They start working within 30 minutes and their effects can last up to 12 hours. If taken more than a few days in a row, they can become less effective.
Antacids relieve heartburn by neutralizing the acid in your stomach but do not reduce acid production at its source. Antacids work quickly, but effects last for only 1-3 hours after use.
TIPS FOR MANAGING HEARTBURN
Avoid Certain Foods That Cause Symptoms
Avoid foods such as rich, spicy, fatty and fried foods, chocolate, caffeine, carbonated beverages, alcohol, coffee, ketchup and mustard, mints, vinegar, tomato and citrus juices, and other acidic fruits and juices.
Enjoy Food In Moderation
Check the nutritional labels on the foods you eat to make sure you’re portioning accurately. Eat slowly, and do not eat big meals.
Be Conscious Of When You Eat
Avoid late-night snacks, and raise the head of your bed. Let gravity do its work.
Get Comfy
Belts and tight-fitting clothing may be fashionable, but they also put extra pressure on your stomach. That extra pressure can interfere with your body’s ability to keep acid in your stomach, where it belongs, and not cause heartburn.
Keep Tabs On Yourself
Achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Track what and how you eat, your physical activity and any medicines you may be taking so you can learn your body’s heartburn triggers and avoid them in the future.
